Episode Summary[]

Press reporters gather outside Blackwall while a senior officer talks to them. Pearce is in Nick's office, recounting what happened to a Brigade counsellor, and breaks down. Recall is fit enough to go home. Sicknote decides he should ring Bayleaf to tell him the bad news about John but is too upset and cannot bring himself to do it. In the end, Jean has to take the telephone receiver and speak to Bayleaf about John.

A counsellor and ACO Baxter talk to Sandra, who is adamant that she doesn't want John to have a Brigade funeral. Maggie is still stunned by Derek's proposal and upsets herself even more when she thinks about John. Nick asks Geoff to empty John's possessions locker, however Geoff doesn't feel up to taking them round to Sandra. In the mess, Billy opines that Pearce is a jinx. The bells go down, it is another shout at St Hugh's hospital. Once again there is no sign of a fire, so the crew go inside to check the pay phones. Billy finds the number of the phone where the 999 call was made from, although the receptionist is unhelpful.

Nick goes to see Sandra with Hallam's belongings. Sandra confides that she is uncomfortable that John died with Geoff. She also insists that Geoff will not be one of John's pallbearers, but Nick doesn't know who else to ask. Recall tells Laura that he is returning to work that night, to her chagrin. Linda pays Jack a visit, wanting to check that he is okay as she heard about the shout, but Jack is not interested in talking and wonders whether he carries bad luck with him. Bayleaf arrives at the funeral directors and meets with the other pallbearers Nick, Sicknote, Recall, George and Jack.

The counsellor talks to Sandra and can sense that something is wrong. Sandra is resentful that John spoke to her about his problems and that it was through her that he met Jenny. She is stunned to learn that John and Jenny had an affair. Geoff informs Nick that he intends to apply for a Sub Officer's post elsewhere and Nick tries to dissuade him. John's funeral takes place. Members of Blue Watch, excluding Geoff and including Bayleaf, carry the coffin into the chapel, where Nick delivers a moving eulogy.
