A protester has climbed the mast of the Cutty Sark in order to hang a protest banner. Sicknote is shocked when he realises that it is Squirrel. She loses her footing and Sicknote and Clingfilm have to go up on the HP to rescue her. Nicky brokers a peace between Jack and Jaffa. She will return to work as a barmaid and Jack is no longer barred from The Ship Aground. DO Chapman arrives at the station and informs a relieved Carole that the rank of Sub Officer will not be abolished, so she can remain at Blackwall after all. However, he advises Nick to try for promotion because the Station Officer rank might be abolished instead.
The pump crew still have to answer for the fire at Upham station. Gregg is feeling edgy because he put the faulty fuse back in the fusebox but George urges him not to say anything. Recall is annoyed that Blackwall's centenary celebration has been cancelled due to cost cutting measures. Geoff is getting friendly with Fiona and invites her for a drink. George and Kelly have a barbecue to celebrate being back together. A neighbour calls the Fire Brigade due to the smoke and Pitbull's crew arrive. George isn't happy when Kelly invites them to tuck in. Nick attends a leaving party for Costas and Evgenia, who are returning to Cyprus. Relations are still frosty between Marianne and Nick's in-laws.
Sicknote and Jean come up with a scheme to foil the planned new road near their house; they plant some rare Toothwort in the area, so the developers will not be allowed to build there. Derek returns from Thailand and tells Maggie that Albie died a year ago. Marianne proposes to Nick. Geoff learns from Carole that the proposed rank restructuring has been postponed, to his obvious disappointment as she will now be staying at Blackwall. The pump crew who stood by at Upham are summoned to see Nick. Gregg owns up to causing the fire and Nick warns him that he will have to face the consequences. The Watch is then called to a huge fire at a bus depot where three children are trapped. Gregg attempts to rescue one of the girls. He climbs up and as he is about to rescue the girl an explosion causes him to fall. He wakes up in hospital, where Tiggy is at his bedside. She says she wants to be with him, but also wants him to leave the Fire Brigade, as she cannot deal with the worrying.
